A few mechanical components will probably get upgraded, but there will be familiar items on the EV, such as the brake system, tires, suspension, steering and differentials. However, don’t assume that the Electric Vehicle will be maintenance or problem free. The amount of technology that will be needed in tomorrow’s EV is staggering, and you the consumer will ultimately pay for that technology, both in the cost of the EV and the needed maintenance.

Recharging Your Electric Vehicle and Driving Range

Two issues must be solved: the range of most EV’s and charging the EV. There are not a lot of EV charging stations on our roadways today, although more and more companies are working with municipalities to increase the amount of charging stations. Another challenge is how and where to install enough charging stations in major cities. Unlike refueling your car, which takes a minute or two, recharging an EV can take up to 5 to 11 hours, depending on the vehicle and the battery’s state of charge. Range anxiety is real, and many EV owners think twice about taking long trips. Today, it’s probably best to install a charging station in your home, but the cost can be expensive.

The range of the EV is a major pain point at this time. Many EV’s only have a range of 60 to 100 miles. Many of the more expensive models can go 200 to 300 miles before a charge is needed. Tesla boasts a range of 520 miles on its 2021 Model S.

There’s no doubt that more and more EVs will be on our roads in the future. However, it will come with challenges. If we look back at the early 1900’s, the shift from the horse and buggy to the internal combustion engine vehicle had a lot of challenges too. Only time will tell how and when the EV challenges and obstacles are solved.

As the country prepares for life after COVID, consumers want to get their lives back to normal, and that means that more and more people will be taking to the roadways this summer. We are already seeing an increase in traffic on the roads, which is a great sign. All surveys indicate that more people will be using their cars this summer for vacation, weekend getaways and a lot more day trips. With this in mind, my blog this month will review and focus on ensuring that your car is ready for the road.

How to Get Your Car Ready for the Road!

Make sure your car is up to date with scheduled preventive maintenance: With so many people working from home last year, and because of so many activities canceled due to COVID, many people did not use their cars a lot. Not using your car can have damaging effects. Before taking any road trip, please be sure to contact your auto repair professional and speak to them about needed preventive maintenance. With regard to the Oil Change Service, if it’s been longer than six months, have the oil and filter changed, no matter how many miles have lapsed since the last oil change service was performed.

Tires: One of the most important safety components on your car are the tires. Please be sure to have the tires inspected and also maintain the correct tire pressure.

Test your Air Conditioner: There is no doubt that there will hot days this summer and you’ll want to have a properly running air conditioner. Have an air conditioner performance test done by an automotive professional as soon as possible.

Wiper blades: Carefully inspect your wiper blades for worn rubber, tears, and streaking. If it’s been over one year, my advice is to replace the blades. A set of new blades really make a difference, especially on a dark rainy night.

Have your cabin filter inspected! The cabin filter is located in your car’s air condition and heater vent system. This filter traps contaminants from entering the car; essentially filtering the air you and your occupants breathe. For health reasons, this filter is one of the most important features in your car and is usually replaced about once a year.

Have your engine air filter inspected! The air filter traps debris from entering your engine. A clean air filter will protect your engine and maintain engine performance and fuel economy.

Battery: Your car battery typically will last about 4 to 6 years. However, it can fail without warning. It’s a good idea to have the battery tested before you leave on your trip.

Perform a Pre-Trip Inspection Yourself: Here is a checklist you can do before you head out on your road trip:

Check all exterior lights
Check tire pressure
Check the oil level
Fill up the windshield washer fluid bottle
Do you have your cell phone, and charger?
Snacks, water bottles, first aid kit
List of emergency contacts
Check the weather forecast
Fill up the fuel tank
Blanket, flashlight, tire pressure gauge
Let friends and family know your trip itinerary
Games for the kids
Clear your trunk and leave room for things purchased on your trip

Things you need to know if you’re driving your car less these days

As a result of the pandemic, many consumers have changed their driving habits. Many people are still working from home, and it appears that some may continue to work a hybrid remote-office schedule, commuting to work on some days, and working from home on other days, which translates to less miles driven.

We are finding that these driving habits may cause a number of mechanical issues which can lead to expensive repairs. In this blog, I will outline a few key tips and information on how to best care for your car. In addition, I will list the potential consequences from driving fewer miles.

Potential Consequences from driving fewer miles:

Fuel – The fuel in your tank can go stale which can lead to fuel system component failures, hard starting, stalling and other engine performance problems.
Battery – Even though your engine is shut off, there is still a slight drain on your battery from the electrical system. Over time, this can lead to a dead battery. Car batteries also deteriorate internally when they sit for a long period of time, which will shorten its life.
Tires – When your car sits in one spot too long, the weight of the vehicle will cause flat spots to develop on your tires. Also, tires that are still for long periods of time and not in motion tend to dry rot.
Cabin filters – Cars that sit make perfect habitats for little critters. These critters usually enter through the heater vents and build a nest in the heater/air conditioner cabin filter.
Wiper blades – When not in use, wiper blades can dry out, rot and stick to the windshield.
Brake components – Unused vehicles are prone to rust buildup on brake components and seized brake hardware, which can severely impair braking ability.
Engine oil – When cars sit for a long period of time, sludge can develop in the oil. This will affect the oil’s ability to lubricate the engine, which can lead to internal engine damage.

What I recommend for the proper care of your automobile!

Drive your car at least once a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each time.
Call or visit your automotive service professional and talk to them about how to properly care for your car.
Operate your windshield washer fluid and wiper blades at least every other week.
Have the oil changed every six months, regardless of the mileage, and make sure that your repair shop performs a complete bumper to bumper vehicle inspection at each visit.
Use a quality oil additive for the engine, a fuel treatment for the fuel system and a fuel stabilizer in the fuel tank if your car sits for long periods of time.
Have your car inspected for rust and other metal corrosion.
Keep your car’s exterior and interior clean.
Make sure your tires are carefully inspected for flat spots and dry rot. Also, check tire pressure at least once a month.
If your car sits for long periods of time, consider a small battery tender. This device will keep your battery fully charged and ready to go when you need your car.

With proper care, your vehicle will last well over 200,000 miles, with years of worry-free driving!

Advice for “Do it Yourself” Auto Repairs

While it may be getting more difficult to work on the average car these days, there are still some tasks that you can do yourself. Just be careful; today’s vehicles are extremely complicated and considered “computers on wheels.” Many simple tasks may end up a very costly mistake, if not done properly.

For those who enjoy performing basic repairs and services on their car, below is a list of tasks I feel can be done by most do-it-yourselfers:

Wiper blades and Washer fluid– Check your washer fluid at least once a month, more often in the winter months. Always use high-quality wiper blades.
Replace Air Filter – Some air filters will require special tools to access and replace. Also, thoroughly clean the air filter housing before installing a new filter. Replace about once a year.
Replace Cabin Filter – Be careful! We have found that mice sometimes build a nest in this filter. The mice enter into the filter area through the vents. If there is any evidence of mice, it may be necessary to disinfect the entire heater and air conditioner system and inspect other components. Replace the cabin filter about once a year, more often if clogged with leaves and debris.
Exterior and Interior Car Washing and Detailing – This is a task that most people can do themselves.
Checking Underhood Fluids – Check every other month, at a minimum.
Checking Tire Pressure – While most newer cars have a tire pressure warning system that will alert you with a dash warning light if the tire pressure is not correct, it’s always a good idea to check your tires with a tire pressure gauge about once a month.
Exterior Bulbs – Many bulbs are very easy to replace. However, many are not and will require special tools and removing body panels.

As someone with more than 45 years of experience in automotive repair and service, here’s a little advice for do-it-yourselfers:

Hybrid and Electric cars – UNLESS you are properly trained, do not attempt to work on these vehicles. There are systems that carry high voltage, which may be a potential health hazard.
Oil changes – Caution: On many vehicles these days, you will need a special oil filter wrench and you may need technical help to reset the dashboard oil change reminder light. Plus, many cars have a plastic shield covering the oil drain plug and oil filter. These shields are held in place with special retaining clips. The clips are easily damaged when being removed.
Make sure you understand the system you are working on. Don’t attempt any repair or service that you are not familiar with. Speak with a professional mechanic before you start any task if you are not sure about the procedure.
For many repairs, you may need special tools and the right information. For your safety and to prevent damage to your vehicle, never attempt any repair without the proper tools and technical information.
If available, take basic automotive classes. Many are held at local colleges, local high schools
and trade schools. There are also many do-it-yourself videos online and on YouTube.
If you are planning on removing wheels and tires, PLEASE BE CAREFUL! Your car must be properly secured with jack stands and the wheels chocked. Removing wheels and performing repairs on your brakes, steering and suspension components may be better left to a professional auto repair facility.
If you plan on changing your oil, antifreeze, or any other fluids, please dispose of the fluids properly.
Check engine lights and other dash warning lights – You can buy an inexpensive computer scanner that will hook up to your car’s computer to access the error information. HOWEVER, I strongly advise that you DO NOT take the error code as a diagnosis. Testing and diagnosing a Check Engine Light or any other dash warning light is best left to a trained automotive professional. Replacing the wrong part or sensor can end up being very costly.
Wear gloves to protect your hands from oil and other chemicals.

Delaying Vehicle Maintenance May End Up Costing You Money!

There are many reasons why people delay automotive maintenance services on their vehicles. It may be the cost, can’t find the time, or perhaps the vehicle owner does not feel that the recommended services will have a real impact on vehicle performance or safety.

Whatever the reason, as an automotive professional veteran with more than 45 years’ experience, I can say with complete confidence that delaying certain automotive services may end up costing you more money in the long term. Even worse, it may also become a safety concern.

Below is a list of vehicle maintenance services that should not be delayed, with the reasons why these services are important:

The Oil Change Service: Delaying or extending your oil change service will cause a buildup of sludge inside your engine, which may shorten the life of your engine, which may result in costly, extensive engine repairs.
Tire Rotations: Performing routine tire rotations extend the life of your tires, which saves you money. It also maintains overall vehicle driving performance.
Wheel Alignment: Performing a wheel alignment with a new set of tires will protect your investment by extending the life of your tires. The wheel alignment should also be checked at least every other year, more often if you drive on roads filled with potholes.
Scheduled Factory Services: Every vehicle manufacturer has a schedule to check certain systems, fluids, and other components at different mileage intervals. This protects your vehicle, maintains your new-car warranty, and maintains overall vehicle performance. This reduces the chances of a breakdown or mechanical failures.
Timing Belt: If your car’s engine has a timing belt, it must be replaced at the recommended mileage interval. The timing belt is located internally, and if it breaks, it can cause extensive and costly engine damage.
Car Battery: Car batteries usually last four to six years and may fail without warning. If your car battery is more than four years old, have it tested ASAP. A weak battery will put an extra load on the car’s electric system, which may damage the alternator (the alternator is the component that recharges the battery). Don’t get stuck on the side of the road. Replace your car battery, if needed.
Check Engine light and other dashboard warning lights: Dashboard warning lights are designed to alert the driver of a potential and/or dangerous situation. DO NOT delay on this. If your car has an illuminated dash warning light, contact your automotive service professional today. Ignoring a warning light will lead to other engine or safety related problems and will cost more money and inconvenience in the long term.
Tires: Perhaps the most important safety component on your car, aside from the brakes, are your tires. Have your tires inspected every year and replaced before it becomes a safety concern.
A word about auto lease vehicles: There is a perception that lease cars don’t need as much servicing since the car is being returned at the end of the lease. Whether you own your car or lease it, for your safety and the safety of your family, there are certain maintenance services that must be performed. Discuss this with your service professionals. They will guide you and give you the best advice on how to properly care for your lease car in order to have safe and reliable transportation, in a cost-effective manner.

The bottom line is this : A well-maintained car is safer, will decrease the chances of an inconvenient mechanical breakdown and will lower the overall costs of owning your automobile.

Choosing the right automotive repair shop is an important decision for you and your family. After all, nearly everyone owns a car, and all cars require periodic maintenance and repairs. In this blog article I will give you tips on how to choose a local auto repair shop. These tips are based on my 45-plus years in in the automotive industry, plus from my personal experiences listening and building relationships with customers as an automotive repair shop owner since 1980.

Don’t wait until you need an automotive repair or service

Just like choosing a doctor or dentist, don’t wait until your car isn’t running right or in need of service. Do your homework. Ask family, friends, and your neighbors for recommendations. You should also go to the repair shop’s website, Facebook page and other social media channels. Check online reviews too. However, understand that no one is perfect, and no business can please everyone. Most important is how the owner of the shop responds to all reviews.

Visit the auto repair shop

Once you have found a repair shop, contact them, and ask to meet and speak with the owner or manager. Be prepared with questions such as: How long have they been in business? What training does the shop provide for the technicians? What certifications does the shop and employees have? Lastly: What vehicles models does the shop work on? Also, look around the waiting area and in the shop. Is it clean, neat, and organized? This tells a lot about the culture of the shop.

Know your Rights

You, as the owner of your vehicle, have the right to get your car serviced at the auto repair shop of your choice. No car manufacturer can demand that you must return to the new-car dealer or use originally equipped parts in order to maintain your new-car warranty. Having your car serviced by a local independent automotive repair shop will not void your new-car warranty.

New car dealership or independent auto repair shop?

New car dealers usually receive training and are equipped to work on one car model. In addition, dealer technicians mostly work on newer cars, and perform factory warranty repairs, factory recalls and other related services. Local independent auto repair shop technicians are trained on many different car lines and independent shops are equipped to work on many car models. This is appealing to consumers since most households usually own different car makes and models.

Local independent auto repair shops and dealerships can usually handle all your car care needs, such as oil changes, brakes, tires, steering, suspension, check engine lights, scheduled vehicle maintenance, tire rotations, wheel alignment and many other services and repairs.

Don’t judge on price alone

Prices vary among new car dealerships and independent auto repair shops. The reason for that depends on what type of services are performed and how the different shops structure their repairs and services. It’s really hard to compare many repairs and services. For example, one shop might give you a price for a water pump replacement, while another shop may also want to replace the antifreeze with the water pump.

My best advice is to compare apples to apples and ask a lot of questions. All repair shops want to give the consumer the best price they can. However, their process of performing auto repairs and service may differ, which will reflect in the price. One thing is for sure, the cheapest priced auto repair shop in town is probably not the shop you want to go to.

The modern automobile is a complex machine, with more computer power than the space crafts had that we sent to the moon! Your car is literally a network of computers on wheels. Training and the proper equipment is an investment that only the best auto repair shops make. Remember, when looking for a doctor or attorney, we can all agree that the cheapest is not the best.

Build a relationship and become a loyal customer

Once you have found your auto repair shop, build a relationship. Get to know the technicians, the people in the service department and the owner. Ask a lot of questions each time you are in for a simple Oil Change, tire rotation, New York State inspection or an extensive automotive repair. You want the shop to know who you are, your driving habits and your particular needs. This will make a more enjoyable experience for you, lower your stress level, and help to ensure that you have safe and reliable transportation.

Staying Safe on the Road During the Holidays

Many of you will be traveling during the holidays to see family, visit friends and possibly take a much-needed overdue getaway. One concern with holiday travel is that it’s during late fall and winter months, which means that the weather can be unpredictable and challenging road conditions. Below are 10 tips to help you prepare your car and also you and your family. Above all, your safety and the safety of your family is most important.

Make sure your tires are inspected by a professional. Tires are the most important item on your car with regard to snow, heavy rain, and ice. You should seriously consider purchasing snow tires if you are planning Winter road trips.
Stay tuned to the weather forecast at least 6 days prior to your trip and don’t take chances. Stay home if there is a possibility of a major storm.
Maintain your speed, especially during rain or snow. In fact, slow down. Speed is the major cause of accidents in bad weather. Please do not attempt to drive in an ice storm.
Make sure your car is properly maintained and inspected by a professional BEFORE your road trip. Tell your Automotive Service facility that you plan on taking a road trip. They will know how to inspect and prepare your vehicle.
Carry the essentials: Make sure you have your cell phone and charger, a list of emergency contacts, water bottles, snacks, a heavy blanket, a small shovel, snow broom, ice scraper, extra pair of gloves, hat, emergency flairs, and kitty litter (this can be used as traction in snow and ice).
Keep your fuel tank full at all times and add a fuel conditioner at the start of the winter season. Ask your service professional, they will know the right fuel conditioner for your car.
Replace your wiper blades if they are more than six months old and carry an extra bottle of windshield washer fluid.
Don’t use your cruise control on wet roads!
Keep you distance between you and the car in front of you. If someone is tailgating, move to another lane and let them pass. It’s not worth a confrontation with someone on the road.
Even though most cars and cell phones have navigation systems, it’s recommended that you still carry an old fashion map with you. You can go online and print out your route. Also, let friends and family know the route you are taking, the time you are leaving and the expected time of arriving to your destination.

Severe winter weather, extreme cold, ice and salt can have damaging effects on your car. Preparing your car for the winter ahead will not only save you money, but it will also greatly reduce the chances of being stranded on a cold and lonely winter night. The best time of the year to get your car ready for the approaching winter season is in the Fall.

Below is a list of services and things to consider to properly prepare your car for the winter and stay safe on the road.

Battery: Car batteries usually last 4 to 6 years and can fail without any warning. If your car battery is at 4 years or older, have it tested. Along with the battery test, ask your auto repair shop to test the alternator and starter

Wiper Blades: Inspect your wiper blades for cracks, tears and loose components. If your wiper blades don’t clear the windshield cleanly and completely, purchase a new set. If you plan on driving your car in all types of winter weather conditions, consider a set of winter wiper blades. For owners of SUV vehicles, don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade too.

Antifreeze/Coolant: Antifreeze/coolant is a liquid that flows through your engine, radiator, and heater system. In the summer months it keeps your engine from overheating. This same fluid is designed to keep your engine from freezing when the temperatures dip down and also keeps you warm inside. Antifreeze/coolant usually lasts about 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the vehicle, make and model. However, if you have more than five years on your car, have the antifreeze/coolant tested by a professional, no matter how many miles you have on your car.

Tires: Tires are perhaps the single most important item on your car, especially during the winter season. Please have a professional inspect your tires before the winter. Don’t skimp on tires and listen to the advice from a pro. If you need to drive in all types of winter weather, consider a set of winter/snow tires. With today’s steering design, consider four winter tires and not two. If you drive an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle, I strongly suggest purchasing a set of four winter tires. Don’t forget to check the spare tire.

Preventive Factory Maintenance: Performing the scheduled factory maintenance is essential to ensure that all vehicle components and systems are maintained according to manufacturer’s guidelines. During the scheduled service, your vehicle is also inspected from bumper to bumper to identify any problem areas. Review your owner’s manual and also consult your automotive professional.

Radiator Hoses and Belts: Hoses and belts can last up to 100,00 miles and longer. However, a hose or belt can fail without any warning. If your car has 100,000 miles or is older than six years, have them inspected today and replace if needed.

Engine Air and Cabin Filters: Your engine air filter cleans incoming air by trapping debris from entering the engine. When the air filter becomes clogged, it can affect engine performance and fuel economy. The cabin filter cleans the air that you breathe inside the car. This is critical since you will have the windows shut and the heater on during the winter months. These filters can last up to two years but should be inspected at every oil change service or once a year.

The Oil Change Service: Notice it says “Service?” Changing the oil and oil filter is more than draining and refilling the oil, and installing a new filter. It’s a chance for a trained auto technician to look over the entire car. These technicians are trained to spot any issues, which will save you money and inconvenience down the road. PLEASE, do not extend the oil change interval. Listen to the advice from your automotive service professional.

Engine and fuel additives: Personally, I like to add an engine and fuel system conditioner at every oil change service. At the very least, add these additives before the winter. It will give your car an added level of protection and extend the life of your engine and fuel system.

Be Prepared for the Unexpected. A winter storm can creep up on you without much warning, so be prepared. Always carry your cell phone, phone charger, a list of emergency contacts, a blanket, bottled water, snacks, gloves, hat, and a flashlight. Keep you fuel tank topped off at all times during the winter months and always let friends and family know the route you take each day.

Preparing your car for winter is about your safety and the safety of others on the road. As you can see, a little preventive maintenance this Fall will give you peace of mind, save you money and lower the odds of a mechanical breakdown.

The average age of a vehicle in the United States is approximately 11 to 12 years old, which means if you were to buy a car today, you could expect that car to last until 2032! The truth is, it can and should.

To make any car last for many years these days does require maintenance and some repairs. While we may not be able to avoid a few unscheduled repairs, there are things we can do to lower the total cost of owning your automobile and enjoy many years of worry-free driving.

Here are six tips to help you squeeze every mile out of your car in the most cost-efficient way:

One: Change your oil on time. Many cars today have extended oil change intervals that may be putting your engine at risk for premature wear. Your mechanic knows best, so listen to his recommendation for your oil change interval. Performing periodic oil changes will protect and extend the life of your car’s engine.

Two: Perform all the scheduled factory services according to your owner’s manual. This is especially important while the car is still under its new car factory warranty. Performing the scheduled factory maintenances is an excellent way to ensure that you are maintaining your car as prescribed by the engineers.

Three: Keep your car clean, inside and out, especially during the winter months. Contaminants from the road, along with salt and other chemicals, can damage your car’s exterior. Have your car washed often, including the undercarriage, and consider a full interior and exterior detail at least once a year. This will also help the resale value of your car.

Four: Don’t ignore warning signs. Whether it’s a dashboard warning, like the Check Engine light, a noise or rattle, tell your mechanic. You may not want to hear the diagnosis, but trust me, it will cost more in the long run if you don’t take care of the problem

Five: Change the other fluids. Your car has other fluids, aside from the oil, that need to be changed. While these other fluids do not require as frequent changing as the engine oil does, they do need to be inspected and changed as needed. These fluids include Power Steering, Antifreeze/Coolant, Transmission, Differential and Brake fluid.

Six: Listen to the advice from your Auto Repair shop and Mechanic. Your auto repair shop has one thing in mind; your safety, saving you money and making your car last as long as possible. That’s why their recommendations may exceed what’s found in your owner’s manual. The advice you get from your mechanic is priceless and will save you money in the long run. So, if your mechanic says it’s time to change the antifreeze and air filter, it’s in your best interest to do so. Plus, your mechanic is trained on many car models, such as Acura, Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Nissan, Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler, Jeep, Lexus, and many other car lines. Your trusted auto mechanic knows your car.

The first thing to discuss is the Tire Rotation. Tire rotations are performed about every 5 to 10,000 miles to ensure that the tires are wearing evenly. A tire rotation simply means moving the rear tires to the front and moving the front tires to the rear. When tires are not rotated, the front tires will tend to wear out quickly due to the force they are under while turning from left to right. Periodic tire rotations will extend the life of your tires, save you money by not having to buy a set of tires prematurely and will also enhance your handling and braking.

Next up is the Wheel Alignment. Aligning the wheels basically means to ensure that the wheels are at their proper angles in relation to the road. If a tire is angled too far to one side, it will wear the tire out quickly, and it will have to be replaced. Properly aligned wheels will also improve steering and handling, especially on roads with a lot of twists and turns. You should have your wheel alignment checked every year, sooner if you have hit a lot of potholes. It’s also a good idea to have your mechanic check the tire balance too when performing a wheel alignment.

Let’s talk about Tire Pressure. Incorrect tire pressure will not only cause tire damage and premature wear, but it’s an unsafe condition. Incorrect tire pressure can lead to a tire overheating, which can cause a serious blow-out. Have your tire pressure checked once a month. All new cars today have a tire pressure warning system, which will shine a light on your dashboard to let you know when to have your tire pressure checked.

Your tires are designed to perform on all types of roads and at different speeds. However, maintain the speed limit. Especially in the rain. After more than 45 years in the auto repair business and performing many vehicle accident inspections for the New York State Troopers and other Police Departments, I can tell you that the number one cause for major accidents is speeding. In addition, on wet surfaces, hydroplaning can occur which will cause you to lose control over your vehicle. Again, slow down and obey the traffic laws.

If you drive a lot in the winter, you should consider snow tires. Snow tires are designed for winter driving and will grip the road better at lower temperatures than conventional tires, which means they have a big advantage during winter driving. One thing to note, remove snow tires in the late spring or they will wear extremely fast as soon as temperatures rise.

Here’s a question I get asked all the time, “How can I learn to change a flat tire.” The answer is not that easy. On some cars, it’s really hard to change a tire. Just finding the jack to raise the car off the ground can be frustrating. On many vehicles, the spare tire is under the car! My advice: carry your cell phone and have a list of emergency contacts.

Another overlooked fact is that tires can go stale. Every tire is stamped with a date code. Based on years of experience, tires that are over 7 years old must be carefully inspected for dry-cracking and tread separation. If the tires are in question, replace them no matter how deep the tread is or how many miles you have driven on them.

While we are on the subject of tire tread depth; New York State mandatory annual inspection regulation does not fail a tire until the tread depth is below 2/32 of an inch. When tire tread depth reaches 2/32 of an inch, it’s nearly bald! I recommend replacing tires around 4/32 of an inch. To put things into perspective, new tires have 10/32 to 12/32 of an inch.

Why You Should Not Extend Your Oil Change Service Interval

Perhaps the most important service you can do for your car is the Oil Change Service. With that said, there is a lot of controversy over when to change the oil and the potential consequences with extended oil change intervals. A little history on engine design, the automobile, and the evolution of engine oil might be helpful. I will also tell you in this article WHY the Oil Change Service is the most important thing you can do to protect and extend the life of not only your car’s engine, but your vehicle too.

40 to 50 years ago, it was common to change your engine oil every 1,000 to 2,000 miles. Cars were not built as well as they are today, and to be honest, were not expected to last over 100,000 miles. That’s why the odometers in cars back then did not go past 99,999. Another thing to remember about the cars of the past, is that they required a lot of maintenance and broke down a lot.

Car makers around the world have made amazing advancements in engine design, automotive electronics, and all the other systems of what makes up the modern automobile. Oil chemistry has also greatly improved. The result? Today we have cars that outperform your parent’s automobiles, pollute a lot less, get better fuel economy, and can last 300,000 miles or more! With better engine designs and better oil chemistry, changing oil every 2,000 miles is not necessary anymore.

Now, hold on there! This does not mean you can neglect the Oil Change Service. Probably the most important reason NOTto extend the oil change service is that the Oil Change Service is more than just an oil change. At every Oil Change Service, we inspect the entire car from bumper to bumper, check the cabin and air filters, the tires and tire pressure, brakes, steering, suspension and all the other fluids. We also check all the vital functions of your car. What it comes down to is a maintenance service that ensures your safety and the safety of your family by making sure that your ENTIRE car is road worthy.

We recommend 3,000-mile intervals for conventional oil and 5,000-mile intervals for synthetic oil – For MOST CARS. There are high-end luxury models that can go more miles between oil changes, but please bear in mind that the oil filter on those cars is a lot larger than your average car and luxury engine oil capacity is up to 9 quarts or more, while your average car engine oil capacity is around 4 to 5 quarts.

Another area of concern is waiting for the dashboard maintenance light to come on to let you know your oil change is due. Those systems are not always accurate, and we have seen where people will drive well over 10,000 miles waiting for that reminder light to come on the dash, which is not good for your engine.

Here’s the bottom line: if you over-extend or neglect your oil change intervals, you will eventually cause engine damage. Today’s engines ARE better, but not very forgiving. Oil will still break down over time and will dissipate, lowering the oil capacity, which reduces the oil’s ability to protect the engine.

We have seen too many cases where engine damage has occurred simply because people have neglected their oil change service or have extended it well beyond the recommended interval. Also consider that we don’t live in a perfect world where the temperature is constant, with no hills and no stop and go traffic. All this adds to wear and tear on your engine.

The best thing you can do for you and your engine is stick to regular oil change services. This will save money in the long run, lower the odds of a breakdown, protect and extend the life of your car and will help keep you and your family stay safe on the road!

Make sure your car is ready for the road!

There is no telling what the full effects of the COVID-19 crisis will be. However, we are seeing positive trends and soon things will begin to get back to what we know as “normal times.” For many of us, the stay-at-home order has resulted in severe cabin fever, longing for the days when we can go out freely and take a drive. Plus, the summer will be here before you know it and that means many of you will be planning a road trip.

With all that we’ve been through these past months, the last thing you want is a breakdown while on your long awaited and much needed road trip. Below are tips to get your car in shape:

Tires: Inspect your tires. If you have been holding off on purchasing a new set of tires, now is the time. Also, if you still have winter/snow tires on your car, they must be removed. Winter tires will wear out extremely fast in warmer weather. Lastly, always maintain the correct tire pressure and check the spare tire also.

Oil Change Service: Make sure you schedule an oil change to include a new oil filter.

Test Your Air Condition: If your car’s A/C is not performing the way it should, have it checked by a professional a few weeks before your planned trip.

Have a professional perform a Pre-Trip Multipoint Inspection: A week or so before your trip, book an appointment with your mechanic and ask him to perform a Pre-Trip Multipoint Inspection. A trained pro will identify any potential problems and give you peace of mind.

Fuel and Oil Additives: These additives should be added as an extra level of insurance for the health of your car’s engine. Plus, they help keep your fuel system and engine running properly and saves fuel also.

Cabin Filter: The cabin filter is located in your car’s air condition and heater vent system. This filter traps contaminants from entering the car; essentially filtering the air you and your occupants breathe. For health reasons, this filter is one of the most important features in your car and is usually replaced about once a year.

Air Filter: The air filter traps debris from entering your engine. A clean air filter will protect your engine and maintain engine performance and fuel economy. Air filters should be inspected at every oil change service and replaced when needed.

Wiper Blades: Wiper blades usually last about a year or so. Inspect your wiper blades for wear and torn edges.

Battery: Your car battery typically will last about 4 to 6 years, but can fail without warning. It’s a good idea to have the battery tested before you leave on your trip.

Clean Your Car: Always start a trip with a nice clean car.

Plan Out Your Trip: Even with navigation systems on your cell phone or on your dash, it’s also a good idea to pre-plan your trip the old fashion way, on a traditional road map. While most of us will still utilize GPS, it’ll help to do a little homework and plan before you head out.

Watch the Weather Forecasts: A few days before your trip, pay attention to the weather reports for your area and the area you plan on traveling to.

What to Carry Along on a Road Trip: While no one wants to have the inconvenience of a breakdown, it’s always best to be prepared. Before heading out, make sure you have your cell phone, cell phone charger, emergency contact list, water bottles, snacks, blanket, flashlight, tire pressure gauge and games for the kids.

Final Pre-Trip Check: On the day you head out, do one last quick check. Check your exterior lights, oil level, washer fluid level, tire pressure and make sure your gas tank is full.

With so many people staying at home these days with limited reasons to go out, it’s easy to neglect your car. It is not good for your car to sit too long. Cars are a lot like people and need to keep moving.

The COVID-19 crisis will not last and you will want your car running properly when life begins to get back to normal. You will need your car to commute to work, for pleasure and running errands.

Another thing to consider is that many of us will be planning road trips soon. Being restricted from our normal daily routines and weekend excursions will cause a pent-up demand to get out and travel. For these reasons, it’s important to maintain your car and make sure it’s road worthy.

Here are a few tips to ensure your vehicle will be ready for when you need it.

Start your car at least three times a week and let it run for about 15 minutes. When possible, take a drive. It’s probably a good idea anyway to get out and take a break. Running your car will keep the battery properly charged, prevent the tires from developing flat spots and help keep the oil from becoming sludge. Also, by driving your car, it will help prevent any rust build up on the brakes. Keep your car running efficiently and reduce the chances of unnecessary repairs.

An Important Message to My Valued Customers and to the Community

This year, I achieved two milestones; I celebrated my 65thbirthday and Osceola Garage celebrates its 40thyear in business. Two events that will now be overshadowed by the coronavirus.

I have lived through many economic and challenging events; from the stock market crash in the late 1980’s, to the housing bust of the 1990s, the tragic events of 9/11 and the great recession of 2008. This is totally different.

Never, have I experienced anything as serious as this. The economic effects that will occur are unknown. We are in uncharted territory. My father used to tell me, “One thing you can rely on are the Churches. Churches don’t close their doors.” Well Dad, “this time it’s different.”

As a business owner, father, husband and part of the community, I have an obligation to many people. That obligation is something that I take very seriously.

We, at Osceola Garage, are having daily meetings to prepare as best we can to be there for you and the community. We know that what we do matters to you and the community. While many of you will be working from home, we also know that many of you are considered essential personnel and need to be on the road. You have my promise that we will be there every step of the way to do our part, in order to help you in every way that we can.

Everyone will be affected by this event, and we, as a small business, must forgo profit and put the needs of the people in our community first.

I want to thank my wife and family for supporting me through the years and understanding that I need to be there for the community, now more than ever.

Many of today’s manufacturers include e-mailed reminders and even remote satellite diagnostic reports. Timely, regular maintenance saves money in the long run by helping your vehicle run efficiently.

Tactical Care

Don’t ignore service-engine lights, poor engine performance, rough handling, fading brakes or other issues that present themselves. Neglect can cost more in the long run by making minor issues worse. For example, brake pads are cheaper and easier to replace than are brake rotors.

Housekeeping

Don’t use the trunk as a catch-all. Keep only essential items there. Remove roof-top cargo carriers as soon as your trip is over. Less clutter means less weight, which means better gasoline mileage. Keep your vehicle’s interior clean of trash and clutter and vacuum the seats and carpeting on a regular basis to prevent premature wear and tear and staining. Wax your car at least once a year to help preserve the paint job (and its resale value).

Heal Thyself

Other automotive resolutions are less about your vehicle and more about you. Avoid jackrabbit starts; sudden accelerations waste fuel and are hard on the engine. Slow down; speeding greatly decreases miles per gallon. Hard stops wear out brakes.

We have now come to a crossroads. The Right to Repair Act is more than a disagreement between the car manufacturers and the aftermarket auto repair industry. Check heating, ventilating & air conditioning systems – Proper heating and cooling performance are critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.

Check wiper blades – Your wiper blades are used more frequently in the fall and winter months, so it’s best to have a fresh set installed so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.

School has ended and that means teens will increase their time behind the wheel. Summer months can be fun, but it’s the most dangerous time for teen drivers. Here are a few tips to share with your teen driver that will help him or her stay safe this summer.

Slow down

Speeding and aggressive driving is the number one cause of car accidents among teens.

Watch out for kids playing

Be mindful and slow down while driving in your neighborhoods as most kids are outside playing.
Pay particular attention when backing up, small children cannot be seen in your mirrors.

Allow extra time

Allow extra time when traveling to work or meeting up with friends. There are more cars on the roadways during the summer months, which means you need to be more aware of the traffic around you.

Beware of summer weather

Summer rains can also be dangerous. Be careful during heavy downpours and especially when it first begins to rain. The roadways can be slick during the first few minutes of a rainstorm; plus hydroplaning is a concern on highways, so slow down in rain storms.
Allow more distance between you and the car ahead of you.

Stay focused on the road
